The Sanyo HD1000 offers a refreshing change from a world obsessed with increasing resolution at the expense of image quality. Based around a four megapixel CCD image sensor and a Xacti HD-branded 10x optical zoom lens with an impressively bright maximum aperture of f/1.8 to f/2.5 across the zoom range, the HD1000 has an equivalent focal range of 38 to 380mm - a moderate wide angle to a very useful telephoto. Still images are recorded to a maximum of 2288 x 1712 pixels with a burst rate of up to seven frames per second at full resolution, while video ranges up to a maximum of 60 fields-per-second 1080i (1920 x 1080 pixels) using MPEG-4 AVC / H.264 compression.

HD1000 images are stored on SD/MMC cards, including the newer SDHC types, while a 2.7" LCD display with 230,000 pixels serves as the sole method of framing or reviewing images. The Sanyo HD1000 also includes both high definition HDMI / and standard definition NTSC / PAL video output, USB 2.0 high-speed computer connectivity, and a built-in flash strobe. Seven scene modes help get the picture you want, with shutter speeds ranging from 4 - 1/1000 second, and ISO sensitivity from 50 to 3200.

The Sanyo Xacti HD1000, announced overseas a few months ago, is available immediately in the USA priced at about $800.

The Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD700 is a seven megapixel camera with a 5x optical zoom lens, and offers still images to a maximum of 3072 x 2304 pixels, as well as a 720p (1280 x 720 pixel, 30 frames per second) movie mode using MPEG-4 AVC / H.264 compression.

HD700 images are stored on SD/MMC cards, including the newer SDHC types, while a 2.7" LCD display with 230,000 pixels serves as the sole method of framing or reviewing images. Japanese consumer electronics company Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd. has unveiled a new digital camera that updates its existing Xacti HD1a model with some new features. The original Xacti HD1 was launched at the Consumer Electronics Show a year ago, followed mid-year by the HD1a (which dropped the original model's OLED display in favor of a more standard LCD display, added a couple of new still and video resolutions, and made it possible to edit videos in-camera). One year later, and the Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2 follows at the exact same $699.99 price as the HD1a, but with two more megapixels of resolution. The Sanyo HD2 couples its seven megapixel imager with the exact same body and lens as the previous models. The only other change of note that we came across in our perusal of the specifications is that Sanyo has dropped the HD1 and HD1a's unusual 60 frames-per-second video mode - perhaps because the data can't be clocked off the higher resolution sensor fast enough to make the mode possible.

The Sanyo Xacti HD2 is marketed as a hybrid device with an emphasis on its better than average (by still camera standards, anyway) video capabilities, and features an unusual vertical "pistol grip" design reminiscent of a camcorder, with no optical viewfinder in favour of a large tilt/swivel LCD display. The Xacti HD2 features an f/3.5 10x optical zoom lens (the lens design originally coming from Konica Minolta), plus an MPEG4 movie mode with resolutions up to 1280 x 720 pixels, and frame-rates up to 30fps in all resolutions. Images are stored on Secure Digital cards, and thankfully (given the camera's ability to fill a 2GB card with video in around 30 minutes) the VPC-HD2 is now compatible with the newer SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) cards. SD cards max out at just 2GB, whereas SDHC cards may be shipping in capacities up to 16GB by the end of the year (should Panasonic fulfil a promise made at CES).

MSRP pricing for the Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2 is set at US$699.99, and the camera ships this March.

The Sanyo Xacti VPC-CG65 is a six megapixel camera with a 5x optical zoom lens, and as with its CG6 sibling offers uninterpolated still images to a maximum of 2816 x 2112 pixels. Where the CG6's VGA movie mode uses the MPEG-4 file format, the CG65 offers MPEG-4 AVC H.264 (.MP4) video - said to yield file sizes 25% smaller than a regular MPEG-4 video.

Most other Sanyo CG65 features seem similar to the CG6: images are stored on SD cards, including the newer SDHC types, while a 2.5" flip-out LCD display serves as the sole method of framing or reviewing images. The Sanyo Xacti CG65 also includes NTSC / PAL video output, USB 2.0 high-speed computer connectivity, and a built-in flash strobe. VPC-CG65 images are captured with a program mode or seven scene modes, with shutter speeds ranging from 4 - 1/2000 second, and ISO sensitivity from 50 to 1600.

The Sanyo Xacti VPC-CG65 goes on sale from April 2007, priced at US$399.99 - a $70 premium over the CG6 model.
